About The Classroom
The Classroom has been a dream of mine for over seven years. I wanted a place to share my ideas, but more importantly that allowed others to share their ideas with me, so that I too may learn. I experimented with many different set ups and programs, static webpages, forums, on-line chats – but it wasn’t till I discovered blogging that everything really gelled. With this blog I can share my thoughts, dreams, and teaching experiences with the world – and get feedback from others to see how my vision compares with them. I truly believe in the Socratic quote “an unexamined life is not worth living” – and this concept applies doubly to the practice of teaching. By actually writing down my thoughts for the week on to my blog, it forces me to examine my personal and professional beliefs. Because it’s out there for the world to see I have to carefully examine what I write, to make sure I don’t miss represent myself, and to make my reflections as clear as possible. I didn’t have to do that with my paper journal – because no one ever read it. But now not only can people read it, they can interact with it, arguing it or reinforcing it as they see fit. This interaction helps me refine my personal philosophies. It’s everything I wanted and more. I don’t profess to be a master teacher with all the answers – but by building this community of teachers, willing to share ideas and beliefs – I can become the best teacher I can be, and hopefully help others improve their practice as well. After all – we’re teachers. Why not teach each other?
